The House Transportation Committee passed legislation 13-4 on Wednesday, moving a step closer to settling the 35-year fight to repeal the state’s helmet requirement. House Bill 4608 and Senate Bill 291 will now move to the House floor.
The legislation would allow motorcyclists 21 years of age and older to go helmet-free provided they carry $20,000 in personal medical insurance coverage.
Representatives Kevin Daley (R-Lum), Mark Ouimet (R-Scio Township ), Wayne Schmidt (R-Traverse City ), and Alberta Tinsley-Talabi (D-Detroit) voted against the bills.
