The House of Representatives passed legislation 69-39 on Wednesday, moving yet another step closer to settling the 35-year fight to repeal the state’s helmet requirement. Senate Bill 291 will now move back to the Senate. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has not yet indicated what will become of the proposal if it arrives on his desk.
The legislation would allow motorcyclists 21 years of age and older to go helmet-free provided they carry $20,000 in personal medical insurance coverage, the highest dollar amount requirement in the United States .
The motorcycle industry has been lobbying for a repeal of the law since 1976. Proponents of the measure claim an influx of riders would bring additional tourism dollars to one of Michigan ’s largest economic sectors.
