"Opening Day" for Michigan 96th LegislatureMembers of the Michigan Senate and Michigan House of Representatives were sworn in Wednesday and while official business in the Senate will have to wait a bit as committees are organized and caucus retreats take place, the House quickly made their presence known on Thursday. The air in the Capitol Wednesday was filled with the hopes of a fresh start and more cooperative atmosphere, as Senators and Representatives joined family and friends for ceremonies and receptions, including the availability of Governor Rick Snyder in the Capitol ceremonial office. New Senate Majority Leader House Speaker James “Jase” Bolger (R-Marshall) did not lack substance in his opening remarks for the 96th session of the House, making mention of specific agenda items and calling for his House colleagues to show courage and accountability. Speaker Bolger called for a 48-month limit on welfare benefits to able-bodied adults, the completion of a 2-year budget by June 1st and the ever-popular elimination of the Michigan Business Tax (MBT). Much of his words were put into action the next day as the House Republicans introduced 85 bills, some Constitutional amendments and released details on the Caucus’ agenda for the coming session. Former Appeals Court Judge Brian Zahra Named Supreme Court Justice
Detroit-native and former Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Brian Zahra was appointed Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court by Governor Rick Snyder to fill the vacancy left by Justice Maura Corrigan who resigned to serve as the Director of the Department of Human Services.
Zahra, 51 and from Northville Township, is a graduate of Wayne State University and the University of Detroit Law School. Mr. Zahra was first appointed to the bench in 1994 when then Governor Engler named him to the Wayne County Circuit Court. He was then appointed to the Court of Appeals by Engler in 1999. In other news from the Michigan Supreme Court, current Assistant U.S. Attorney and Thomas M. Cooley Law School professor Matthew Scheider was named Legal Counsel and Chief of Staff to the Court.
